Environmental Conversations: Speakers Announced

We were delighted to be joined by a range of local artists and organisations for the Compact’s first environmental sustainability workshop last month, hosted at Pavilion Dance in Bournemouth. Following an inclusive and welcoming introduction by Helena Yasmin, attendees discussed ways the creative industries engage with the climate crisis, locally, nationally, and internationally.

David Buckland, Director of Cape Farewell, gave an incredibly inspiring talk about facilitating climate-inspired art over the last twenty-five years. Cape Farewell’s maxim, ‘Climate is Culture’, was brought to the fore as he discussed collaborations between artists and scientists and what can be learned from working together. He also spoke about Cape Farewell’s base in North Dorset, his hopes for the future, and shared a sneak peak at ‘Our Life is Here’, a new film that explores how the climate crisis is affecting The Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

Our next event is happening at Lighthouse Poole on 13th November, 2-5pm, with tickets bookable from our linktree and eventbrite pages. Rachael Duthie will be our guest speaker, talking about Theatre Green Book and her experiences setting up SAGE – a network for South-West-based artists interested in working sustainably. There will be additional contributions from Christine Eyre, Low Carbon Officer at BCP Council, and Antosh Wojcik, local poet and sound designer who’s taken huge inspiration from the Dorset landscape in his work.

As with all Cultural Compact events, admission is free. We are able to pay five freelancers £40 each to attend, with more information on the event booking page.
